Medieval cathedral and wharf houses on the Nidelva
Trondheim was Norway's first capital and has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, when pilgrims walked here to the tomb of St Olav. Nidaros Cathedral, the country's grandest Gothic building, still dominates the centre. The Old Town Bridge leads to Bakklandet, a quarter of wooden houses and cafés, while the colourful wharf warehouses along the Nidelva river make the city's defining view. A big student population keeps the place young, and the region has a growing reputation for food.
