A capital built on fourteen islands
Stockholm is a city of water and light, spread over fourteen islands linked by bridges and ferries. Gamla Stan, the old town, is a maze of ochre and red houses around the Royal Palace, while Djurgården holds the Vasa Museum, home to a 17th-century warship raised almost intact from the harbour, and the open-air Skansen. Södermalm has the best cafés and vintage shops. In summer, ferries carry locals out to the tens of thousands of islands of the archipelago.
