A walled Hanseatic town on the island of Gotland
Visby was one of the great trading towns of the Hanseatic League, and its wealth built the wall that still encircles the old town for more than three kilometres, along with dozens of churches whose roofless ruins now stand among the houses. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In summer, Swedes arrive by ferry for beaches, cycling and the Medieval Week festival in August; beyond the walls lie the limestone sea stacks, or raukar, of Fårö.
