A green, car-free capital on a gentle river
Ljubljana is a compact capital of cafés and bridges along the Ljubljanica river. Much of its character comes from the architect Jože Plečnik, who designed the Triple Bridge, the riverside market colonnade and many of its public spaces. The old town is largely car-free, and a funicular climbs to Ljubljana Castle for views of the Alps. Visit the Central Market, the Dragon Bridge and Metelkova, the alternative arts quarter, and spend an afternoon in Tivoli Park.
