Where the Nile bursts through a narrow gorge
At Murchison Falls the whole flow of the Victoria Nile squeezes through a gap in the rock only about seven metres wide before tumbling into a pool below. Boat trips up the river from Paraa pass hippos, crocodiles, elephants and birds, including the prehistoric-looking shoebill, and end below the falls. A hike to the top of the falls shows their force at close range. North of the river, the savannah holds giraffes, lions, buffalo and Uganda kob, while the Budongo Forest to the south has chimpanzees.
