The birthplace of the walking safari
South Luangwa lies in the Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia, where the meandering river and its oxbow lagoons support dense populations of hippos, elephants, buffalo and giraffes, including the local Thornicroft's giraffe. The park is one of the best places in Africa to see leopards, especially on night drives. Walking safaris were pioneered here, and bush camps allow multi-day walks between them. The main gateway is Mfuwe, reached by a short flight from Lusaka.
