Península Valdés

Whales, elephant seals and penguins on the Patagonian coast

Península Valdés juts into the Atlantic in Chubut province, and its sheltered gulfs are a breeding ground for southern right whales, which come close to boats from Puerto Pirámides between roughly June and December. Elephant seals and sea lions haul out on its beaches, and at Punta Norte orcas are known for surging onto the shore to hunt sea lion pups, most often in March and April. Magellanic penguins nest here and at the huge colony of Punta Tombo further south. Puerto Madryn is the usual base.
