Quebrada de Humahuaca

A multicoloured valley of Andean villages

The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a mountain valley in Jujuy province, used for thousands of years as a route between the Andean highlands and the plains, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its rock strata make vivid colour: the Cerro de los Siete Colores rises behind the village of Purmamarca, and the Serranía de Hornocal near Humahuaca shows fourteen hues at sunset. Tilcara has a reconstructed pre-Inca fortress, the Pucará. Adobe churches, llama stew and the salt flats of Salinas Grandes are nearby.
