The city at the end of the world
Ushuaia fills a slope between the snowy Martial mountains and the Beagle Channel on Tierra del Fuego. Boat trips on the channel pass sea lion colonies and the red-and-white Les Éclaireurs lighthouse, and some continue to the penguins on Isla Martillo. Tierra del Fuego National Park, just west, has coastal and forest trails, and the old prison, which held convicts sent here to build the town, is now a museum. From late spring to early autumn, most Antarctic expedition ships sail from its harbour. Try the king crab, centolla.
