A wall of ice that cracks and crashes into a lake
The Perito Moreno Glacier flows down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into Lago Argentino, ending in a jagged blue wall about 70 metres high. Walkways on the Magallanes Peninsula face it across a narrow channel, and the main pleasure is to wait and listen for the cracks and roars as towers of ice collapse into the water. Boat trips go up close, and guided walks on the glacier itself use crampons. El Calafate, the base town, is also the start for boat trips to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers.
