Graz

Red roofs, a clock tower and a friendly alien

Graz is Austria's second-largest city and a relaxed alternative to Vienna and Salzburg. Its old town, a UNESCO site, is a sea of red roofs with Renaissance courtyards and the Landhaus, and the Schlossberg hill above it is topped by a clock tower. Across the River Mur, the Kunsthaus Graz is a blob-like modern art museum nicknamed the Friendly Alien, and the Murinsel is an artificial island in the river. Graz is known for food, with pumpkin seed oil a Styrian specialty, and the Styrian wine roads are close by.
