Mozart's baroque city beneath a fortress
Salzburg's baroque old town, framed by mountains and the River Salzach, was shaped by its powerful prince-archbishops and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, looks down from its hill. Mozart was born here, and his birthplace on the Getreidegasse is a museum. The Mirabell Gardens and other locations from The Sound of Music draw fans, and the Salzburg Festival each summer is one of the world's leading music festivals. The lakes of the Salzkammergut are nearby.
