Wachau Valley

Apricots, riesling and a riverside abbey

The Wachau is a UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, where terraced vineyards and apricot orchards line steep banks. At its western end, the golden baroque Melk Abbey rises above the river, with a magnificent library. Dürnstein, with its blue church tower and castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was held captive, is the prettiest village. The region is known for its Grüner Veltliner and riesling wines. Explore by river cruise, by bike on the Danube Cycle Path, or on foot.
