Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Austria's highest mountain on a spectacular road

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road was built in the 1930s and winds for about 48 kilometres through the Hohe Tauern National Park, with 36 hairpin bends. It climbs to viewpoints facing the Grossglockner, at 3,798 metres the highest mountain in Austria. At Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, you look down on the Pasterze, Austria's longest glacier, and marmots are often seen along the way. The road is a toll route open from late spring to autumn, and a favourite of motorcyclists. Zell am See and Heiligenblut are good bases.
