An alpine city with peaks at the end of every street
Innsbruck is one of the few cities where you can take a funicular from the centre and be high in the Alps within half an hour. The Nordkette cable cars climb to views over the Inn valley. The old town has pastel facades and the Golden Roof, a balcony covered with gilded copper tiles made for Emperor Maximilian I. The Hofburg and the Court Church, with its bronze statues, recall the Habsburgs. Innsbruck has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, and ski areas surround the city.
