A lakeside village between mountain and water
Hallstatt clings to a narrow strip of land between the Hallstätter See and the Dachstein mountains, and its pastel houses and church spire reflected in the lake make one of the most photographed views in Europe. Salt has been mined in the mountain above for thousands of years, and the salt mine tour includes wooden miners' slides. A small bone house holds painted skulls. Hallstatt is very busy by day, so staying overnight or visiting early is recommended. The Dachstein caves and the Five Fingers viewing platform are nearby.
