Colourful colonial hills above Recife
Olinda climbs a hill just north of Recife, its colonial streets lined with houses painted in bright colours and baroque churches with views over the sea and Recife's skyline. Artists keep studios and galleries in the old houses, and the Alto da Sé square has stalls selling tapioca pancakes at sunset. During Carnival, giant puppets parade through the streets to frevo and maracatu. Recife itself has the Instituto Ricardo Brennand's art collection and the ceramic workshop of Francisco Brennand.
