Pantanal

The best place in the Americas to see wildlife

The Pantanal is a vast seasonal floodplain straddling Brazil's border with Bolivia and Paraguay, and its open landscape makes it one of the finest wildlife destinations anywhere. The dry season, roughly July to October, concentrates animals around the remaining water. From Cuiabá, the dirt Transpantaneira road crosses more than a hundred wooden bridges to Porto Jofre, where boat trips on the rivers search for jaguars resting on the banks. Along the way are hyacinth macaws, jabiru storks, capybaras and caimans by the hundred.
