The polar bear capital of the world
Churchill can't be reached by road, only by plane or a long train journey from Winnipeg, and that isolation is part of its fame. Each October and November, polar bears gather along the Hudson Bay coast waiting for the sea ice to form, and visitors watch them from specially built tundra vehicles. In summer, thousands of beluga whales move into the Churchill River estuary, where they can be seen from boats or kayaks. The northern lights appear on many clear nights, especially in late winter.
