Québec City

North America's walled French city

Québec City is the only walled city north of Mexico, and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The turreted Château Frontenac hotel looms over the Dufferin Terrace boardwalk and the St Lawrence River. Below, the narrow Petit-Champlain quarter is lined with boutiques and bistros, and Place Royale marks where the French founded the city in 1608. Montmorency Falls, higher than Niagara, is just outside town. Winter is magical, with the Carnaval de Québec and snowy streets, though summer is warmer for exploring.
