Pharaohs' treasures and a thousand minarets
Cairo is vast, loud and endlessly absorbing. The Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza and the older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square hold the finds of pharaonic Egypt, including Tutankhamun's treasures. Historic Cairo, the medieval city, is packed with mosques and madrasas, from the Mosque of Ibn Tulun to the Sultan Hassan complex, and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar has traded for centuries. Coptic Cairo holds ancient churches, and the Citadel looks over it all. Eat koshari and ful, and take a felucca on the Nile at sunset.
