The world's largest Buddhist temple
Borobudur was built in the 8th and 9th centuries and is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. It takes the form of a stepped pyramid: the lower terraces carry more than two thousand relief panels depicting the teachings and life of the Buddha, and the upper circular terraces hold seventy-two bell-shaped stupas, each containing a seated Buddha. Seen at sunrise, with mist in the valley and the volcanoes of Merapi and Merbabu behind, it is one of Southeast Asia's great sights.
