A smoking volcano in a sea of sand
Mount Bromo sits within the Tengger caldera in East Java, an active cone rising from a flat plain of grey volcanic sand known as the Sea of Sand. Most visitors rise in the dark to watch the sunrise from Mount Penanjakan, when mist fills the caldera and the smoking peaks of Bromo, Batok and distant Semeru appear. Then it's down across the sand by jeep or on foot to climb the steps to Bromo's crater rim. The Tenggerese people hold the Yadnya Kasada festival here each year.
