Yogyakarta

Java's city of sultans, batik and temples

Yogyakarta, or Jogja, is Java's centre of traditional arts and the only Indonesian region still ruled by a sultan. The Kraton, the sultan's palace, hosts gamelan music and shadow puppet performances, and the ruined Taman Sari water castle lies nearby. Jalan Malioboro is the lively main street, and the city is known for batik and silverwork. Jogja is also the base for Java's two great temples: Buddhist Borobudur to the northwest and Hindu Prambanan to the east, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
