Banaue Rice Terraces

Terraces carved into the mountains by hand

The rice terraces of Banaue, in the Cordillera mountains of northern Luzon, were carved by hand by the Ifugao people and have been farmed for centuries. They climb the steep slopes like giant staircases, watered by an irrigation system fed from the forests above. The terraces of Batad, reached on foot, form a spectacular amphitheatre and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walks lead between villages of traditional Ifugao houses, with a waterfall at Tappiya to cool off in.
