A Roman temple in the heart of the Alentejo
Évora is the capital of the Alentejo, a region of cork oaks, olive groves and wide golden plains. Its walled centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the columns of a Roman temple at its highest point and a fortress-like Gothic cathedral nearby. The Capela dos Ossos, lined with the bones of thousands of people, is its most memorable sight. Around the city are megalithic sites, including the Cromeleque dos Almendres stone circle. The Alentejo's food, like black pork and açorda, and its wines are excellent.
