Port wine, tiles and the Douro river
Porto is Portugal's second city: hilly, a little gritty and full of character. Tiled churches and the São Bento station hall glow blue and white, the Ribeira waterfront is lined with cafés, and across the double-decker Dom Luís I bridge the port lodges of Gaia pour tastings. Try a francesinha, the city's heroic sandwich, then take a train or boat up the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley.
