A whitewashed village inside castle walls
Óbidos is a small walled town of whitewashed houses with blue and yellow trims, bougainvillea and cobbled lanes, crowned by a castle that is now a hotel. Portuguese kings traditionally gave the town to their queens as a wedding present. You can walk along the top of the walls, which have no railing, for views over the countryside. Ginja, a sour cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups, is the local speciality. The town is an easy day trip from Lisbon and pairs well with the surf beaches of Peniche and Nazaré.
