Bodrum

Whitewashed Aegean resort with a crusader castle

Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, home of the Mausoleum that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; only its foundations remain. Today the town is known for its white houses, bougainvillea and the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller, which houses a museum of underwater archaeology. The surrounding peninsula has quieter bays such as Gümüşlük, where fish restaurants line the water, and gulets leave the harbour for days of swimming along the coast.
