Konya

The city of Rumi and the whirling dervishes

Konya was the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum and the home of the thirteenth-century poet and mystic Jalal al-Din Rumi, known in Türkiye as Mevlana. His green-tiled tomb, now the Mevlana Museum, draws pilgrims and visitors alike, and the Mevlevi order he inspired is known for the whirling ceremony, the sema. The city also holds fine Seljuk architecture, including the Karatay Madrasa with its tiled dome. Try etli ekmek, a long, thin flatbread with minced meat.
