Colossal stone heads on a mountain summit
At over 2,100 metres, the summit of Mount Nemrut holds the tomb-sanctuary of Antiochus I, a first-century BC king of Commagene. His burial mound of loose stones is flanked by terraces of seated statues of gods and the king himself, their huge heads now toppled and arranged on the ground. Visitors come for sunrise or sunset, when the light turns the stone red and gold. The nearby towns of Kahta and Adıyaman are the usual bases, and the road also passes the Roman Cendere Bridge.
