Oak-lined towns and vineyards under blue mountains
An hour inland from Cape Town, the Winelands roll across valleys ringed by jagged mountains. Stellenbosch is a university town of oak-shaded streets and whitewashed Cape Dutch houses, Franschhoek was settled by French Huguenots and is now known for its restaurants, and Paarl sits beneath a great granite dome. Estates such as Boschendal and Babylonstoren pair tastings of Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cabernet with long lunches and gardens. The Franschhoek Wine Tram links cellars without anyone needing to drive.
