iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Hippos, turtles and coral reefs on one coastline

iSimangaliso stretches along more than 200 kilometres of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, from Lake St Lucia to the border with Mozambique. The town of St Lucia is the base for boat trips on the estuary, which holds large numbers of hippos and crocodiles. Along the coast, loggerhead and leatherback turtles come ashore to nest in summer, while Sodwana Bay has some of the southernmost coral reefs in Africa for diving. Nearby Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is known for its role in saving the white rhino.
