Basalt walls and San rock art in the high berg
The Drakensberg, or uKhahlamba, forms a basalt rampart along the border with Lesotho. The Amphitheatre, a five-kilometre curve of cliff, is where the Tugela Falls plunge in a series of drops, and the trail to its summit via chain ladders is one of the country's classic hikes. Caves and overhangs across the range hold thousands of San rock paintings, some of them centuries old, with fine examples at Giant's Castle and Kamberg. Valleys such as Cathedral Peak and Champagne Castle have lodges and well-marked walking routes.
