Kanchanaburi

The River Kwai and jungle waterfalls

Kanchanaburi is a quiet town on the River Kwai with a heavy history. Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers were forced to build the Thailand-Burma Railway here during the Second World War, and the Bridge on the River Kwai, the war cemetery and the Death Railway Museum tell that story. Further up the line, Hellfire Pass is a moving memorial. The surrounding country is lovely: the seven tiers of Erawan Falls are a favourite swim, and many guesthouses float on rafts on the river.
