Turquoise lakes linked by hundreds of waterfalls
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a chain of sixteen lakes cascading down a forested valley, linked by waterfalls and travertine barriers, and one of Croatia's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Wooden boardwalks lead right across the water, and electric boats and park trains connect the upper and lower lakes. The colours shift from turquoise to deep green with the light and the minerals. Arrive early to beat the crowds, and consider autumn for the foliage. Swimming is not allowed.
