Split

A living town inside a Roman emperor's palace

Split grew up inside the vast retirement palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, and people still live, eat and shop within its ancient walls. Explore the Peristyle, the cellars and the cathedral, once Diocletian's mausoleum, then walk the palm-lined Riva promenade. Marjan Hill, a wooded park at the edge of town, has trails and swimming coves. Split is also the main ferry hub for the Dalmatian islands, including Hvar, Brač and Vis.
