Zadar

Roman ruins and a sea organ at sunset

Zadar packs three thousand years of history onto a small peninsula, with a Roman forum, the round pre-Romanesque church of St Donatus and Venetian gates. Its waterfront has two modern installations: the Sea Organ, whose pipes play as waves push air through them, and the Greeting to the Sun, a solar-powered light show on the promenade. The sunsets here are famous. Zadar is also a good base for the Kornati Islands and the national parks of Paklenica and Krka.
