A café-loving capital of Austro-Hungarian grandeur
Zagreb divides into the medieval Upper Town, with its cobbled lanes and St Mark's Church with its tiled roof, and the grander Lower Town of parks and museums. Ride the short funicular between them, browse the Dolac market under red umbrellas and linger in cafés along Tkalčićeva Street. The Museum of Broken Relationships is a quirky favourite. In December the city hosts one of Europe's best-known Christmas markets.
