Cliffside villages above a glittering sea
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of cliffs south of Naples, with villages clinging to the rock and a famously twisting road linking them. Positano is the postcard, Amalfi the historic heart and Ravello the calm, garden-filled perch above. Summer is glamorous and packed; spring and early autumn are warm enough for swimming with far fewer crowds. Ferries are often easier than the road.
