Porticoes, towers and Italy's richest cooking
Bologna is home to one of the oldest universities in the world and some of Italy's finest cooking. Its centre is lined with kilometres of porticoes, a UNESCO site, leading from Piazza Maggiore to the two leaning medieval towers. This is the home of tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in brodo and mortadella, and the food shops of the Quadrilatero market streets are a pleasure to browse. Parma and Modena, for ham, Parmigiano and balsamic vinegar, are short train rides away.
