Puglia

Trulli, whitewashed towns and olive groves

Puglia runs down the heel of Italy between two seas, a flat, sunny region of ancient olive groves and whitewashed towns. The Valle d'Itria is dotted with trulli, stone houses with conical roofs, most famously in Alberobello. Ostuni is a white hill town, Polignano a Mare perches on sea cliffs and Lecce is known for its ornate baroque churches. The cooking is simple and superb: orecchiette, burrata and fresh seafood. A car is the best way to get around.
