Turquoise coves and an island apart
Sardinia is an island with its own language, cuisine and ancient past, ringed by some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The Costa Smeralda in the northeast is famously glamorous, while the Gulf of Orosei has dramatic coves reached by boat or on foot. Inland, thousands of Bronze Age nuraghi, stone towers such as Su Nuraxi, dot the hills. Eat roast suckling pig, pane carasau and pecorino, and consider hiring a car to explore.
