Mallorca

Coves, mountains and a Gothic cathedral by the sea

Mallorca is far more varied than its package-holiday reputation suggests. Palma has a vast Gothic cathedral facing the sea and an old town of courtyards and tapas bars. The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO-listed mountain range along the northwest coast, hides stone villages such as Deià and Valldemossa, and the town of Sóller, reached by a vintage wooden train from Palma. Around the coast are turquoise coves like Caló des Moro and Cala Mondragó. Cycling, hiking and ensaïmada pastries round out a visit.
