The city of three cultures on a river bend
Toledo rises on a rocky hill almost encircled by the River Tagus, and for centuries Christians, Muslims and Jews lived here side by side. Its compact centre holds a grand Gothic cathedral, synagogues such as Santa María la Blanca, and small mosques that predate the Christian reconquest. El Greco lived and worked here, and his painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz hangs in the church of Santo Tomé. The city is also known for damascene metalwork, swords and marzipan. Stay overnight to see it quiet.
