Aït Benhaddou

A mud-brick fortified village on the caravan route

Aït Benhaddou is a ksar, a fortified village of earthen houses and kasbahs climbing a hillside above the Ounila river, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a familiar backdrop from many films. Walk across the river, climb through the lanes to the granary at the top for views over the valley, and come in the late afternoon when the walls glow red. Nearby Ouarzazate has film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah.
