Casablanca

Art deco boulevards and a mosque over the ocean

Casablanca is Morocco's biggest city and economic centre, more modern and cosmopolitan than its film-famous name suggests. Its landmark is the Hassan II Mosque, partly built over the Atlantic with one of the tallest minarets in the world, which non-Muslims can visit on guided tours. The city centre has fine art deco and Mauresque buildings from the French period, and the Corniche at Aïn Diab is lined with beach clubs and seafood restaurants. The Habous quarter has a calmer, planned medina.
