Tangier

Where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic

Tangier looks across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain and has long been a crossroads, from its time as an International Zone to the writers and artists, such as Paul Bowles and Matisse, who lived or worked here. The Kasbah crowns the medina with views over the strait, and the Petit Socco and the Grand Socco are its traditional squares. Café Hafa has served mint tea on terraces above the sea for a century. West of town, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules mark the Atlantic coast.
