Dunes, camels and a sky full of stars
Near the town of Merzouga, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise to around 150 metres, the easiest taste of the Sahara from Morocco's big cities. Most visitors ride camels out at sunset, sleep in a desert camp and watch the stars before climbing a dune for sunrise. It's a long drive from Marrakech or Fes, so break the journey in the Dades or Todra gorges.
