High Atlas

Berber villages below North Africa's highest peak

The High Atlas rises just south of Marrakech, a range of snow-capped peaks, terraced valleys and Amazigh (Berber) villages built of stone and earth. The village of Imlil is the trailhead for Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, usually climbed over two days. Gentler walks link villages through walnut groves, with mint tea and tagines in family homes. The Tizi n'Tichka pass carries the road over the range towards Ouarzazate and the desert.
